You are unlocking your phone, and a colleague glances at the screen. In that split second, they see a private chat or a banking notification. AppLock eliminates that risk by creating a private, secondary security layer for your most sensitive applications. Instead of relying on your device’s single lock screen, this tool lets you individually gate each app, so a photo gallery, a messaging app, or a finance app requires its own PIN, pattern, or fingerprint before opening.
Core Functionality
AppLock operates as a background service that intercepts launch intents. Once installed, you select which apps to protect. The app then monitors the Android activity stack. When a protected app is launched, AppLock overlays a lock screen before the target app’s UI is drawn. This prevents any content from being visible before authentication.
- Multi-authentication modes: Supports PIN code (4-8 digits), custom pattern (minimum 3x3 nodes), and fingerprint biometrics (Android Marshmallow+). Each mode stores credentials locally using AES-256 encryption.
- Intruder selfie capture: If a wrong PIN or pattern is entered three times, the front camera silently captures a photo. This image is stored in a hidden folder accessible only from the AppLock interface.
- Time-based auto-lock: After unlocking an app, you can set a delay (5 seconds to 10 minutes) before the lock reactivates. This prevents repeated authentication when switching between protected and unprotected apps.
- Cover image masking: When a protected app is launched, a fake error screen (e.g., "App crashed" or "Update required") can appear instead of the real lock screen. This disguises the existence of AppLock itself.
Key Advantages
The tool runs with minimal battery drain—typically less than 2% per full charge cycle based on system resource monitoring. It does not require root access, functioning entirely within standard Android permissions. The app supports all launchers and does not interfere with system animations or app performance. A "Lock New Apps" toggle automatically secures any newly installed application until you manually review it.
