Description Criptext
Your emails are not your property. Criptext changes that.
Criptext is a privacy-first email application that fundamentally redefines ownership and security in digital communication. Unlike conventional email services that scan your messages for advertising data or store them on centralized servers, Criptext operates on a decentralized model. It is the only major email client that stores your entire inbox, including attachments, exclusively on your device—not on a cloud server. This structural shift eliminates the core vulnerability of modern email: the assumption that a third party has permanent, unencrypted access to your correspondence.
Core Mechanics and User Experience
The application is built around the Signal Protocol, the same end-to-end encryption standard used by secure messaging apps. This ensures that only you and your intended recipient can read the contents of any email. The key distinction from standard encrypted services is that Criptext does not require both parties to be on the same platform. You can send fully encrypted emails to any existing email address (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, etc.). The recipient receives a link to read the message securely in a browser, without needing to create an account.
The user interface is a direct, material-design client that mirrors the functionality of traditional email apps. It supports push notifications, swipe gestures for archiving and deleting, and a unified inbox for multiple addresses. The primary departure from convention is the offline-first architecture. All actions—composing, searching, reading, and organizing—happen instantly because the data is local. Syncing occurs only when a message is sent or received, drastically reducing data usage and improving speed on slower connections.
Key Advantages
- Zero-Access Architecture: The provider cannot read your emails, reset your password to access your data, or comply with data requests for message content. Your encryption keys are generated and stored on your device.
- Decentralized Identity: Your account is not tied to an email address on a server. Your identity is a cryptographic key pair. If you lose your device, you cannot recover your account unless you have the recovery phrase (a 12-word seed phrase, similar to cryptocurrency wallets).
- No Data Mining: The business model is subscription-based (free tier available, paid tiers for storage and features). Your data is not the product. There are no ads, no scanning for keywords, and no behavioral tracking.
- Ephemeral Messages: You can set messages to self-destruct after a specific time period. Once read, the message is permanently deleted from both the sender's and recipient's devices after the timer expires.
- Attachments as Links: Instead of uploading heavy files to a server, attachments are encrypted and stored locally. The recipient receives a secure download link, preventing server-side storage bloat.
