Can You Really See Your Glucose Without Scanning?
For anyone managing diabetes with the Freestyle Libre 2 sensor, the standard workflow involves scanning the sensor with a reader or smartphone to get a glucose reading. The official Librelink app uses the Bluetooth connection primarily for alarms—it tells you when you're too high or too low, but it doesn't show the actual number. That's where Juggluco steps in, offering a fundamentally different approach: real-time, minute-by-minute glucose data streamed directly to your phone, without requiring you to lift a finger for a scan.
Developed by Jaap Korthals Altes, this app acts as a direct Bluetooth bridge to your Freestyle Libre 2 (and newer versions support Libre 3, though the core functionality is optimized for Libre 2). Instead of relying on periodic scans, Juggluco continuously receives the glucose stream, displaying the current value on your smartphone screen alongside the standard high/low alerts. The result is a persistent, live view of your glucose levels—perfect for those who want to monitor trends without interrupting their day.
The setup process is precise but straightforward: Juggluco can only take over the Bluetooth connection if all competing connections are eliminated. This means you must force-close the Librelink app and either turn off your Freestyle reader or disable alarms in those apps and devices. Once done, you scan the sensor with your smartphone while Juggluco is in the foreground. If everything goes smoothly, within 20 minutes (often less), Juggluco establishes a steady Bluetooth connection and begins receiving glucose values. After that, you can still scan with Librelink or the Freestyle Reader for manual checks, but their alarms will no longer function—a trade-off for continuous data. (Patched versions of Libre 2 or Librelink apps can sometimes intercept the connection, causing Juggluco to lose access, so caution is advised.)
Once connected, Juggluco does more than just display the current number. It presents a comprehensive graph that merges Bluetooth stream data with scan results: the current value, the last 8 hours of sensor memory, and historical trends. You can also overlay insulin doses, carbohydrate intake, and physical activity directly onto the graph, turning it into a detailed logbook. From the Bluetooth stream, the app generates summary statistics: time in range, estimated A1c, and, once enough data is collected, an aggregated summary graph that reveals patterns over days or weeks.
One of the most versatile features is its smartwatch integration. Juggluco can push glucose data to wearable devices through four distinct methods:
- Android notification relay: Creates a notification that is forwarded to compatible smartwatches (Notify).
- Kerfstok watch app: Works with specific Garmin watches.
- xDrip watch apps: Compatible with all major smartwatch types.
- Android broadcast: Sends glucose values to other Android apps, which then forward them to connected watches.
- Juggluco for WearOS: A dedicated Wear OS companion app for seamless on-wrist viewing.
Additionally, Juggluco can use (but not activate) US-based Freestyle Libre 2 sensors, expanding its utility for international users. The app is completely ad-free, with premium features available through Turbo—a value proposition that prioritizes function over distraction.
