Vanced — Full-Featured YouTube Client With Advanced Playback and Ad Blocking Tools

Vanced is a modified YouTube client developed by Team Vanced, designed to extend the standard YouTube experience with a comprehensive set of playback, interface, and content control features. Unlike the official YouTube app, Vanced removes advertisements, enables background playback, and provides granular control over video resolution and playback behavior. However, it does not include a video download function — all streaming remains online-only.

Core Playback and Multitasking Capabilities

The application introduces two primary playback modes not available in the standard YouTube client: background playback and picture-in-picture (PiP) mode. Background playback allows audio to continue streaming while the device screen is turned off or while navigating to other applications. PiP mode displays the video in a resizable floating window that persists on top of other apps, enabling simultaneous multitasking. Both modes work with any video on the platform, including live streams and premieres.

Ad Blocking and Content Filtering

Vanced integrates a multi-layered ad-blocking system that targets all advertisement types present on YouTube. This includes pre-roll ads displayed before videos, mid-roll ads inserted during playback, overlay banners, and promotional cards appearing between video segments and in the comments section. The ad filter also detects and automatically skips embedded sponsorship segments within videos, where creators include paid promotions as part of the content. Users can optionally disable ad blocking for specific channels or globally if they wish to support content creators through ad revenue.

Interface Modifications and Usability Enhancements

The application restores several interface elements removed by YouTube in recent updates. Notably, Vanced re-enables the dislike counter beneath each video, allowing viewers to see the total number of dislikes alongside likes — a feature that helps assess content quality before watching. Additional interface adjustments include the ability to set a default video resolution (up to 4K), regardless of the device’s display capabilities, and the option to override the device’s maximum resolution for higher-quality playback on external monitors or cast devices.

Gesture-Based Controls and Playback Tweaks

During video playback, Vanced supports gesture-driven adjustments for volume and screen brightness. Swiping up or down on the right side of the screen controls volume, while swiping on the left side adjusts brightness — both with real-time visual feedback. The app also includes a speed control slider for variable playback rates, ranging from 0.25x to 2.0x, and a repeat mode toggle for looping single videos or entire playlists. Gesture sensitivity can be customized in the settings menu.

Installation Requirements and Compatibility

Vanced requires the installation of Vanced microG as a dependency, which provides the necessary Google Play Services APIs for account login and push notifications. The main Vanced APK must be installed after microG. The app is compatible with Android devices running version 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher. It does not require root access, though certain advanced features may benefit from a rooted environment.
